Hiragana and Katakana Flash Cards

As part of my ongoing quest to learn Japanese, I poked around the net for flash cards to learn hiragana and katakana. I found a few, but none really fit my needs. Some were incomplete, some had too many cards per page to be practical once printed, and so on. However, they inspired me to create my own. The links below are the results.

Hiragana Cards v1.1 (October 24, 2006)
Katakana Cards v1.2 (November 5, 2006). Fixed a “ji” [was a "te"] on page 13-14 (ht, gsmith).

How to print:

  1. Can your printer make double-sided prints?
    • Print them double-sided on the long edge of the paper.
  2. Is your printer limited to single-sided prints?
    • Print the even pages, load the paper back into your printer and print the odd pages.
    • NOTE: Run a test page first to get the paper orientation right.

Potential To Do List:

  • Add a phoenetic word on the english side, one per card (’e’ -> ‘wEHb’ or something like it)?
  • Some kind of registration mark on the japanese side to indicate up? Caret? Tiny Arrow? Maybe on the english side instead?
  • Pictures as a mnemonic?
  • On the ‘wa’ card, note that it’s written as ‘ha’. (Is there specific rule that governs the substitution?)
