This Is Why You Don’t Have Any Friends

Connecting to a Microsoft SQL Server has proven to be more of a pain that I figured it would be. Especially since I’m connecting to it using another Microsoft product, asp. See if you can spot the problem in this connection string:

objConn.ConnectionString = “Provider=SQLOLEDB;Data Source=myservername.ourcompanyname.com;Initial Catalog=pubs;User ID=sqlID;Password=sqlPasswd”

It gives the lovely error:

Microsoft OLE DB Provider for [...]

So, maybe asp isn’t quite that evil. But, there a few things that puzzle me as I start to delve into it. Thankfully, Active Directory is enough of an LDAP-alike that asp will work on non-MS LDAP servers with little trouble. Here’s a simple search from a function I wrote:

SQLStmt = “SELECT ” & searchAttributes [...]

Sure would have been nice for Fedora Core 4 to not have a huge, glaring, drive a Mac truck through it hole, but it does. The default firewall rules break windows file share browsing. The options so far?

Setup your own WINS server
Open every high port to UDP requests from port 137
Disable the firewall

For a few days now, actually. Switched to the Fiestamericana Hotel this year. Huge improvement for a small outlay of cash (~$50 more than the Hotel Cozumel), not the least of which was canned beer.
